From May 8 to May 12, Nintendo will offer Switch 2 GameCube controllers for purchase to select individuals who receive invites. Following this exclusive window, starting May 13, all Nintendo Switch Online subscribers will have the opportunity to order the controller. However, it’s important to note that using the GameCube controller is not mandatory for playing GameCube games on the Switch 2.
Fans eager to own a GameCube controller will need an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription. The Nintendo GameCube controller holds a special place in gaming history, making its return for the Switch 2 particularly exciting. Priced at $64.99, this wireless controller is expected to appeal primarily to Super Smash Bros. enthusiasts and those seeking an authentic experience with GameCube games available through the Switch Online’s Expansion Pack.
Acquiring the Switch 2 GameCube controller is not as simple as going to a store. Instead, these controllers must be purchased directly from Nintendo. Selected individuals who receive invites to pre-order a Switch 2 will have priority when it comes to securing the GameCube controllers.
Following this initial period, all Switch Online members will gain the chance to order a controller on May 13. A limit of one purchase per Nintendo account will apply, and individuals signing up for a free trial of Switch Online will be ineligible. The Switch 2 GameCube controllers are expected to sell out quickly, similar to previous console accessories which have experienced high demand.
While these controllers are not required for playing GameCube games, nostalgically inclined gamers will likely prefer using them to relive classic experiences. On June 5, the Switch 2 will launch alongside three classic GameCube titles: F-Zero GX, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, and Soulcalibur 2. More beloved GameCube games, including Chibi-Robo and Super Mario Sunshine, are confirmed for future release, although specific dates are yet to be announced.
