PlayStation Plus Set for Exciting Changes on August 19: What to Expect

PlayStation Plus subscribers enrolled in the Extra or Premium tiers will be able to enjoy the day one release of Sword of the Sea at no extra charge on Tuesday, August 19. While it is uncommon for PlayStation Plus to feature day one titles, the service has introduced several notable releases in 2025, such as the well-received first-person puzzle game Blue Prince and the recent cooperative survival game Abiotic Factor. Although day one releases for PS Plus Extra may not occur every month, the service is currently enjoying a fortunate streak. Following June’s FBC: Firebreak and July’s Abiotic Factor, Sword of the Sea will be the latest addition to the lineup.

Premium subscribers can anticipate this release as well since all Extra content is accessible to them. Sword of the Sea, created by Giant Squid—the studio responsible for Abzu and The Pathless—invites players to navigate a desolate world using their distinctive hoversword, with the goal of restoring the land. The game emphasizes both surfing and skateboarding mechanics, while also incorporating combat and platforming elements. What truly sets Sword of the Sea apart is its exquisite visual presentation.

The game features a breathtaking blend of azure oceans and striking desert landscapes. The trailers for Sword of the Sea suggest it will boast a remarkable musical score, positioning it as one of the year’s standout releases. Those unsure about its visual appeal can take comfort knowing it is directed by Matt Nava, the art director of Journey. August 19 is shaping up to be significant for Sony’s subscription service, not just with Sword of the Sea but also due to the debut of other new PS Plus Extra games.

However, subscribers will need to wait a couple of weeks to learn about the complete lineup. It’s also important to note that some titles, including The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, will be leaving PS Plus Extra on the same day.
