Nintendo has issued a cautionary note regarding the use of Mii Fighters in online matches for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on the newly released Switch 2.
The developers have identified a game-breaking bug that can crash online matches, leading to an unsatisfactory gameplay experience. Additionally, there are issues with Mii Fighter thumbnails not saving correctly, which can detract from player immersion.
Nintendo has assured fans that they are working rapidly to address these concerns. As of its launch on June 5, 2025, the Nintendo Switch 2 boasts nearly 30 games, although Super Smash Bros.
Ultimate is not one of them. However, players can still enjoy the game on the new console due to its backward compatibility feature.
While this offers fans continued access, an unexpected error concerning Mii Fighters has prompted action from Nintendo and developer Bandai Namco. Reports from users highlighted that issues arise when Mii Fighters are used in online matches between players on different consoles—specifically when one is on Switch and the other on Switch 2, leading to crashing before matches can commence.
In addition to the crashing issue, there is a secondary problem where Mii Fighter thumbnails do not accurately reflect the customizations made to the characters. This inconsistency can detract from the experience, especially since the Mii Fighters are known for their extensive costume options.
Nintendo suggests that players might be able to remedy this by revisiting the character creation screen and saving their Mii Fighters again. Despite being released over six years ago, Super Smash Bros.
Ultimate remains a top-seller among Switch games, only trailing behind Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Animal Crossing: New Horizons. While there is no official sequel announcement yet, there have been hints from creator Masahiro Sakurai about the possibility of a new Smash Bros. game in the future.
